This year, the TIC Council International Energy Safety Conference, co-hosted with the American Petroleum Institute (API), will take place on 12 and 13 March at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco, California.

 

What is the Safety Conference?

This conference is an effort to offer an open forum for all O&G Stakeholders, where dynamic and result-oriented discussions can take place to address safety issues. It will gather industry leaders from the inspection, petroleum shipping, and terminal sectors to tackle the critical safety challenges confronting the petroleum industry onshore and offshore.

Day 1 – Current Safety Challenges in the O&G Industry

Vessel Access 

Despite significant progress in improving vessel access safety, dangerous incidents continue to occur. This session provides a global perspective, looking to reinforce the importance of safe practices and proper oversight when accessing vessels. Industry experts will share key insights into recent advancements, highlight remaining challenges, and discuss practical strategies for achieving a consistently safer industry moving ahead.

This session will address the essential standards for work conditions that inspectors should expect while staying aboard third-party vessels, especially during extended stays. The presentation will explore the legal frameworks that define these expectations, discuss real-world examples from industry inspectors, and will outline the responsibilities of vessel owners and operators in ensuring safe, comfortable, and compliant conditions for third-party personnel.

It will emphasize the importance of understanding and addressing human behaviour to create safer environments. Day 2 – Future Safety Challenges in the O&G Industry

Harmonized Pre-Work Checklists 

This session will explore the challenges arising from heterogeneous approaches to pre-work checklists for at-risk activities, with experts from the O&G and Inspection industry discussing potential strategies for developing standardized approaches to ensure consistency for end-users operating across multiple facilities. Participants will be invited to discuss how a potential standardization effort on pre-work checklists may be conducted with the aim to strengthen governance, oversight, and ultimately, safety within the Petroleum and Petrochemicals Industry

Fuelling the Future: Safe Handling and Awareness of New and Future Fuels  

As ESG compliance and global investment in sustainable alternatives to petroleum and petrochemical-based fuels grow, it is essential to understand the potential risks associated with these alternative energy sources. This session will challenge the perception that these alternatives are inherently "safer" and will delve into the safety challenges and implications of the new and innovative fuels poised to enter the market in the coming years. 

This session will cover: 

  1. Hydrogen: A deep dive into the hydrogen value chain, highlighting the role of the TIC industry in ensuring quality and safety. The presentation will explore drivers for hydrogen certification, complexities in transportation, and the comparative risks of various distribution methods.
