TIC Council Hosts Second Petroleum Industry Safety Conference

The TIC Council hosted the second multi-stakeholder Safety Conference on 5 September 2019 in New York City, in partnership with BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell. The successful conference was attended by around 70 representatives from leading inspection, petroleum, shipping and terminal companies who came together to discuss topical safety issues faced in both on and offshore settings.

The opening session was facilitated by Loss Prevention System (LPS) representatives and focused on issues surrounding ethics, integrity and behaviour-based safety systems. The following session covered the newly published inspection industry safety code which was an action item discussed and agreed upon during the last years’ conference. The new safety code received positive feedback from the participants. It provides safety guidance for inspection companies, terminals, vessels and Principals and can be used as part of training for personnel in each of these groups.

The event continued with a presentation by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) covering their recent activities including their activities around vessel access. The conference ended with an interactive discussion on Stop Work Authority and the challenges, hazards and risks surrounding its use.

The conference provided an open forum for participants to share best practices, openly discuss the current challenges in the sector and agree on suitable solutions to address them, which represents an important step towards a stronger safety working culture and environment for all.
